Since 2004, Bidoun has filled a gaping hole in the arts and culture coverage of the Middle East, pioneering a distinctive voice that is intelligent, critical, and original. From the beginning, Bidoun has served as a platform — for new questions, images, and ideas about the Middle East. Bidoun’s activities fall in three primary areas: publishing, educational, and curatorial. To date, our projects have included a range of pursuits: curatorial initiatives, educational programs, artist commissions, talks, tours, performances, books, an itinerant library, and an online archive of avant-garde media.
Concreta surge de un deseo compartido y de una carencia: el deseo de construir una plataforma desde la que contribuir a la reflexión contemporánea sobre la imagen, a través de la publicación de una revista semestral y de una serie de libros de artista; y de hacerlo desde un lugar preciso, una comunidad marcada durante los últimos quince años por la desaparición sistemática de la infraestructura cultural dedicada a las artes plásticas y visuales. Esta situación local de crisis cultural se suma a la actual situación de colapso global del capitalismo financiero, que apunta hacia un cambio de paradigma en muchos aspectos, no solo a un nivel macroeconómico sino también, y sobre todo, micropolítico, anunciando un oscuro futuro para la cultura y las artes.
Foam Magazine is a distinctive and highly appreciated international photography magazine, published quarterly by Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and Vandejong Communications.
Foam Magazine serves as exhibition space that embraces every aspect of photography: from documentary to fashion, from contemporary to historical, from world-famous photographers to young talent. Each issue features a specific theme that unites 8 diverse portfolios of 16 pages. Each portfolio is printed on a different type of paper.
Deep Sleep is a quarterly online photography magazine founded by and featuring work from a small group of contributors who share the same office space in Shoreditch, East London. Each issue (published in February, May, August and November) will be on a specific theme and guest contributors are also invited to submit a set of images based on that theme. The only stipulations are that deadlines will be strictly observed, that contributions must, in our judgement, fit the theme and that we are seeking photography of the highest calibre, whether from experienced award-winning and exhibited contributors or emerging young talents in search of an outlet for their work. There’s no money involved, of course. Not for anyone. In fact, one of our motivations was to do something untainted by the demands of the marketplace. So it is very much a labour of love and we welcome anyone who would like to share in that.
